Demystifying Support in Singing

Singers are often told they need more support, but what does that really mean? In this three and a half hour session we will explore singing support through the lens of Body Mapping. We will learn how the structures and movements of inhalation, exhalation, and resonance work together to create the supported singing sound known as appoggio.

A good inhalation is the prerequisite for support in singing. After the first hour of the series, participants will understand how movements of various structures within the torso draw air into the body. Resonance contributes color and focus to singing, but can also help the vocal folds vibrate more efficiently and help manage the breath flow. After the second hour of the series, participants will be able to use the moveable structures in the vocal tract to shape their resonance. In the third hour of the series, we will relate inhalation, exhalation, and resonance to find the balanced, efficient movements that create a supported singing sound.
