Franz Messerli

Cardiology

Franz H. Messerli, MD, is a specialist in hypertensive cardiovascular disease and preventive cardiology. At present, he is guest professor at the Swiss Cardiovascular Center of the University Hospital in Bern, Switzerland, emeritus professor of medicine at Mount Sinai Health Medical Center, Icahn School of Medicine and visiting professor at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. After his graduation in medicine at the University of Bern Medical School in Switzerland and post-graduate training in internal medicine and cardiology at the University of Bern, Dr Messerli participated in a research fellowship at the Clinical Research Institute in Montreal, Canada. Before moving to New York, Dr Messerli directed clinical research at the Ochsner Medical Institutions and held the position of Clinical Professor of Medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans for many years. He was a member of the Cardio-Renal Advisory Committee of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and various editorial boards, including the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the European Heart Journal, Circulation, Hypertension, the American Journal of Cardiology and the Journal of Hypertension. He has more than 900 publications on his CV and he has been first author on several papers in the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Jama and others. Dr Messerli has received several awards for his scientific achievements, including a honoris causa doctorate from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland and the Alberto Zanchetti Life Achievement Award of the European Society of Hypertension.
