Penelope Roskell is an international concert pianist and Professor of Piano at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance as well as visiting professor at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Penelope has special expertise in helping injured pianists to resume healthy piano playing. She has taught classes in holistic playing at most conservatoires and musical institutions in the UK and has been Director of the Musician’s Clinic, the ISSTIP Music Medicine Therapists course, and of the EPTA Piano Pedagogy Course. Penelope is the piano consultant for the British Association for Performing Arts Medicine, where she is conducts a multi-disciplinary pianists’ clinic with hand surgeon Mr Mark Phillips. Although a classical pianist herself, she works there with injured pianists from all genres, including rock and music theatre. She has produced a DVD on “Yoga for Musicians”, which addresses problems faced by all instrumentalists, and a book “The Art of Piano Fingering”. Her major book on all aspects of healthy piano playing, The Complete Pianist: from healthy technique to natural artistry, was published by Edition Peters in February 2020 by Edition Peters. This book, which features 300 videos and 250 newly devised exercises, brings together a lifetime’s experience of working with pianists in a very practical and inspiring way. Penelope has performed as soloist at major concert halls throughout Britain, with conductors including Sir Simon Rattle and Daniel Harding. She has also given solo recital tours in over thirty countries worldwide. She won first prize in the British Contemporary Piano Competition and second prize in the National Concerto Competition, and has made numerous broadcasts on radio and television.
In between her busy teaching schedule, Penelope still performs as
soloist and with the Roskell Piano Trio and the Fitzwilliam String
Quartet. She has been a member of the jury on many competitions,
including the BBC Young Musician of the Year and the David Parkhouse
Award.
